4 Signs Your Pool Has a Leak (And How to Test It)

Is Your Pool Losing Water?

If you check one or more of these boxes, you likely have a structural or plumbing leak.

Water Loss > 1/4" Daily

Outside of normal evaporation, losing significant depth daily is the #1 indicator of a leak.

Cracks & Tile Damage

Visible fissures in the shell or falling tiles often point to shifting ground caused by water escape.

Soggy Landscape

Unexplained "soft spots" in your lawn or deck settling are signs of underground pipe failure.

Chemical Struggles

If you're constantly adding salt or chlorine, you aren't just losing water—you're losing your balance.

The Bucket Test

The Bucket Test is the easiest way for a homeowner to confirm or rule out a leaking swimming pool. Simply place a 5 gallon bucket on the top step of the pool and fill it with water. Mark the water level in the interior of the bucket. Next, mark the water level of the pool against the outside of the bucket. Wait a day and check the water levels. If the bucket’s water level has dropped the same as the pool, you are just dealing with evaporation. If the pool has lost more than the bucket, you have a leak.
